Mamata Banerjee Says Will Hand Over Doctor's Rape-Murder Probe To CBI If...

RG Kar Hospital Rape Murder Case: Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee met the victim’s family (File).

Kolkata:

The police will have time till Sunday to solve the rape-murder last week of a 31-year-old doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College, failing which the CBI will take over the case, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said Monday afternoon. The deadline for the state cops – whom Ms Banerjee backed and praised as “the best in the world” – comes amid intense political pressure by the BJP.

“If there are more accused… and all are not arrested by Sunday… we will hand over the case to the CBI,” the Chief Minister said after meeting the family of the victim, and threw in a swipe at the federal agency, which reports to the BJP.

“… we will hand over even though their success rate is low,” she said, referring to cases taken by the CBI, like the theft of Rabindranath Tagore’s Nobel Prize, but which had seen “no justice till date..”

Last week too, the Chief Minister said she has no objection to the CBI – which reports to the BJP-led union government – taking charge of this case, particularly if that was the demand of protesting medical professionals. “… if agitating students want probe by another agency, we are not against it.”

Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal, speaking after Ms Banerjee’s deadline, outlined steps being taken by the cops to solve this crime. “We are certain… in the next four or five days, if there are more culprits, we will be able to arrest them,” he said, “We have started a helpline… doctors can give information by calling (and) can communicate anonymously… if they have suspicions.”

“We are in touch with family members. We will stay in touch and share progress with them… If, even after that, family is not satisfied then whatever madam (Ms Banerjee) has said will happen,” he said.

The doctor was found on Friday morning in the seminar hall of the state-run hospital.

The initial autopsy report said the victim was bleeding from her eyes, mouth, and private parts, as also on her left leg, neck, right hand, ring finger and lips.

Earlier, BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari had targeted Dr Ghosh and demanded his suspension.

Elephants – The Engineers Of Ecosystems

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

India is a biodiversity hotspot. Very few countries in the world can rival India’s mega biodiversity. We are also ethno-culturally one of the richest countries in the world. Deep reverence to nature and wildlife is a common thread across different communities in India. Wildlife conservation is ingrained in our ethos and has always been an integral part of Indian tradition. Our deep-rooted connection with nature is the reason why India is harbouring the largest population of two charismatic species – tigers and Asian elephants.

On World Elephant Day, a reflection of the importance India attaches to elephants is found in the fact that we treasure it as our National Heritage Animal. It is a matter of pride for us to have more than 60% of the total wild population of Asian elephants in India. More importantly, the elephant population in the country continues to be stable. Under the Narendra Modi-led government, the number of elephant reserves has also gone up to 33 and the area under Project Elephant has risen from 76,508 sqkm to 80,777 sqkm, particularly over the last decade. India places elephants in Schedule-1 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, according the highest degree of legal protection to both populations in the wild and elephants under human care.

Beyond their religious and cultural impact, it is worth noting that the evolution of elephants is very similar to that of humans. Both humans and elephants evolved around the same time in ancient Africa before colonising most of the world. It is often said that prehistoric humans often followed the trail left by prehistoric elephants to reach new places. Thus, elephants and people have a longstanding relationship. This bond has acquired a deeper essence and understanding in India.

The social behaviour of elephants has also evolved remarkably similar to that of humans. The elephant is a social animal. They live in herds, except lone tuskers. The elephant’s society is matriarchal and the herds are mostly led by the oldest female in the group. They share strong bonds, especially when it comes to protecting young calves. The mother elephant, along with other female elephants, has been seen encircling the young ones to guard against looming threats or in the presence of large carnivores.

Elephants live long and possess evolved and strong olfactory and acoustic senses. They are said to have the ‘elephantine’ memory as well. Widely known for expressing their grief or trumpeting happiness in celebrations, elephants are emotional too. It is heart-warming to see them bathing in water bodies, enjoying mud showers and wallowing in swamps. Watching the playful young ones and erratic lone tuskers is also a delight.

It is important to recognise the impact of elephants in the lives of innumerable flora and fauna in the forests and various other ecosystems such as grasslands and wetlands. While moving from place to place in search of food and water, elephants invigorate the life cycles of thousands of trees, shrubs, herbs, insects, and associated mega herbivores – the reason why they are called engineers of ecosystems. Elephants have far larger implications for our ecosystems and are the true keystone species responsible for conserving our biodiversity.

Fortunately, India has more than 25,000 elephants in four major regions – South, North-Western, Central-Eastern and North-Eastern – of their inhabitation. The southern region has the largest population – around 12,000 – followed by the northeast region that has over 10,000 elephants.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

Several important elephant habitats in the country have been notified as elephant reserves. A total of 33 elephant reserves have been notified in the country over an area of 80,777 square km spread across 14 states. Led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, in coordination with the state forest departments, has ground validated 150 elephant corridors across 15 elephant-range states in the country and has informed the state governments and Union Territory administrations to take necessary steps to protect and conserve the elephant corridors. The ministry has taken steps to strengthen the management of elephant reserves by piloting a management effectiveness evaluation in four reserves and establishing a framework for conservation, which will drive scientific and professional management of India’s elephant reserves.

Since elephants and people share space, their harmonious coexistence is crucial for long-term survival of the species. Reconciling human welfare along with the conservation needs of elephants assumes priority. The Modi government has placed emphasis on janbhagidari (public participation) in every aspect of elephant conservation. The government believes active participation of local communities is key to steering elephant conservation to new heights. All of us here have a collective responsibility towards ensuring elephant welfare.

It is often said, rightly so, that one cannot imagine India without elephants. With the collective efforts of all stakeholders, the Modi government is striving towards securing a viable population of elephants and other wildlife species for future generations.

Massive protests have broken out after the rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata

Kolkata:

The principal of RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata resigned today amid massive protests over the rape and murder of a 31-year doctor on campus late on Thursday. Dr Sandip Ghosh told the media that he “cannot take the humiliation” on social media and that “political statements are being made in his name”.

Dr Ghosh, who has been accused of victim blaming after the horrifying incident, has denied that he made any such remark. “Students are being provoked to ensure my removal. I want the accused to be punished. I am being defamed. I have not made such remarks,” he told the media this morning. “The girl who died was like my daughter. I am also a parent. As a parent, I am resigning,” he said.

The senior doctor told the media that he is an orthopaedic surgeon and can earn his livelihood. “Everyone thought Sandip Ghosh cannot resign. I am honest. After I took over, I cracked down on corruption. I have worked for the development of the hospital and in the interest of the patients,” he said.

“Delete Picture”: Ex Pakistan Star Slams PM Shehbaz Sharif For ‘Insulting’ Arshad Nadeem

Pakistan has found a new hero in Arshad Nadeem. The athlete’s gold medal at the Paris Olympic Games 2024 earned the nation an unprecedented high, becoming the only Olympian in the nation’s history to bag the gold medal in an individual sport. After returning home, Nadeem had the chance to meet Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif who presented him with a cash reward of PKR 1 million (approximately INR 3 lakh). Seeing Arshad get such a low amount from the Pakistan PM as a reward for his heroics in the Paris Games, the country’s former cricketer Danish Kaneria lashed out on social media.

“Bravo Arshad. History made! Pakistan’s first Olympic men’s javelin champion, Arshad Nadeem @ArshadOlympian1 brings home a historic #gold medal at #Paris2024 ! You’ve made the whole nation proud young man,” the Pakistan PM had posted on X.

Kaneria feels such a low cash reward is an ‘insult’ to both Arshad and Pakistan.

“Mr. Prime Minister, at least offer a graceful congratulations. Delete the picture of the million rupees you gave-it does nothing for his real needs. This amount is so small he can’t even afford air tickets. It’s an insult to both Arshad and the nation, considering his ongoing struggles,” Kaneria wrote on X, reacting to the post.

Having brought glory to Pakistan, Arshad is bound to remain in the spotlight for some time. Hoping to make the most of the situation, the athlete has asked the Pakistan government to provide his village with better roads, cooking gas connection,s and other basic facilities.

“My village needs roads. If the government provides cooking gas, it would be great for me and my village. I also have a dream that Mian Channu city gets a university so that our sisters won’t have to travel to Multan, which is 1.5 to 2 hours away, to study. If the government makes a university here it would be a great news for my village and the neighbouring ones,” Arshad told reporters in Pakistan.

Reynolds and Lively score box office wins with ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ and ‘It Ends With Us’

In a cinematic showdown between Hollywood’s power couple Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively, both emerged victorious at the box office. Reynolds’ “Deadpool & Wolverine” held its top spot for the third consecutive week, amassing $54.2 million in North American ticket sales and crossing the coveted $1 billion mark worldwide.

Not far behind, Lively’s romance drama “It Ends With Us” shattered expectations with an impressive $50 million opening weekend.

This dynamic duo created a “family edition” of the “Barbenheimer” phenomenon, where two contrasting films thrived due to counter-programming. “Deadpool & Wolverine,” a raucous superhero flick, and “It Ends With Us,” a heartfelt romance based on Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel, attracted diverse audiences, showcasing the couple’s wide-ranging appeal.

While Reynolds and Lively celebrated their success, the weekend also saw a high-profile flop with the long-delayed video game adaptation “Borderlands,” which opened to a disappointing $8.8 million.

“Deadpool & Wolverine,” directed by Shawn Levy, is now the second R-rated film to cross $1 billion, trailing only “Joker.” It stands as one of the most successful Marvel releases and the second highest-grossing film of the year, behind Disney’s “Inside Out 2.”

Lively’s “It Ends With Us,” which she both stars in and produced, proved to be a profitable venture with its modest $25 million budget. It’s expected to maintain its momentum through August, capitalizing on its strong audience reception.

Reynolds and Lively playfully acknowledged the convergence of their film releases, further fueling audience interest. Their combined success underscores their star power and the potential for diverse storytelling to capture the hearts of moviegoers.

Doctors Across India To Go On Indefinite Strike Over Kolkata Murder

Kolkata Murder: Resident doctors are protesting across India

New Delhi:

Doctors of several hospitals across India have announced an indefinite strike to protest against the gruesome rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital. Doctors in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and several other cities have announced that all elective services would be halted till a probe is completed in the case. The protesters are also demanding adequate security for all medical staff.

The announcement comes days after a postgraduate trainee doctor was raped and murdered at the RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata while on duty.

The body of the 32-year-old woman was found in the seminar hall of the government-run hospital in the West Bengal capital on Thursday night. The initial autopsy report stated that the victim was bleeding from her eyes, mouth and private parts. There were also injuries on her left leg, neck, right hand, ring finger and lips.

City Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal visited the medical establishment on Sunday for the second time in three days and held a meeting with representatives of agitating junior doctors.

He claimed the probe is “transparent” and urged people not to spread rumours.

Police have arrested one person in the case, a civic volunteer who is not associated with the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, but used to frequent the place.

The man, Sanjoy Roy, had returned to his place and went to sleep before washing his clothes the next morning to destroy evidence, a police officer probing the case claimed.
