New UK PM Keir Starmer To Scrap Rwanda Plan

'Not Prepared To Continue With Gimmicks': New UK PM To Scrap Rwanda Plan

Keir Starmer said previously that Sunak’s policy was neither a deterrent nor value for money.

London:

Britain’s new Labour Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Saturday said he was “not prepared” to continue with the previous Conservative government’s flagship scheme to deport migrants to Rwanda.

“The Rwanda scheme was dead and buried before it started… I’m not prepared to continue with gimmicks that don’t act as a deterrent,” he told reporters at his first news conference.

Ex-prime minister Rishi Sunak has staked his political reputation on his plan to “stop the boats”, pushing the controversial deportation plan despite opposition from rights groups and judicial rulings.

Labour, however, said it would jettison the scheme to remove people to Rwanda who crossed the English Channel by boat from northern France.

Immigration has become an increasingly central political issue since the United Kingdom left the European Union in 2020, largely on a promise to “take back control” of the country’s borders.

Starmer said previously that Sunak’s policy was neither a deterrent nor value for money.

He has pledged to tackle the issue “upstream” by smashing the people-smuggling gangs behind the crossings.

Central to the policy would be a new “elite” Border Security Command, comprising immigration and law enforcement specialists, as well as the domestic intelligence service MI5, he has said.

An estimated 12,313 people have made the crossing to Britain so far this year, an 18 percent increase from the same period last year, the UK Home Office said last month.

There were 29,437 arrivals across the whole of 2023, a drop of 36 percent on a record 45,774 arrivals in 2022.

Political Slugfest Over Sword Attack On Punjab Shiv Sena Leader

New Delhi:

The brutal attack on Shiv Sena (Punjab) leader Sandeep Thapar by Nihang Sikhs in Ludhiana has become a political flashpoint. The assault, captured on CCTV, occurred near the Civil Hospital, where Thapar sustained severe injuries after being repeatedly struck with swords.

Thapar, known for his vocal stance against Khalistan, was returning from an event at the Samvedna Trust when the attackers, dressed in traditional Nihang attire, intercepted him. The video footage shows Thapar on a scooter with his security personnel when the attackers surrounded him. Despite his attempts to reason with them, the situation quickly escalated into violence. With folded hands, Thapar pleaded for mercy, but the attackers mercilessly struck him on the head, causing him to collapse. Even on the ground, he was subjected to further assaults, leaving him in critical condition.

Thapar’s gunman left the crime scene without any retaliation.

Eyewitnesses immediately rushed Thapar to the Civil Hospital, from where he was later transferred to the Dayanand Medical College and Hospital for further treatment. Hospital sources indicate that he suffered severe injuries to his head, arms, and legs, requiring urgent medical intervention.

The Ludhiana Police have registered a case of attempted murder against the unidentified attackers. Two suspects, identified as Sarabjit Singh and Harjot Singh, were arrested in Fatehgarh Sahib district, while a third, Tehal Singh, is still on the run.

In response to the escalating tensions, political figures from across the spectrum have condemned the attack, with accusations levied against the Punjab government for failing to maintain law and order. Opposition leaders, including Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu, Bathinda MP Harsimrat Kaur, and BJP Punjab chief Sunil Jakhar, have called for immediate action and accountability from Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.

Union Minister of State Ravneet Singh Bittu, who unsuccessfully contested the Lok Sabha elections from Ludhiana, said: “Such a brutal attack on an individual in full public view is condemnable. It has created panic among residents.”

Targeting the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in the state, he said, “The administration is missing from Punjab. They have made a mockery of law and order. Officers are busy pleasing AAP leaders instead of doing their job.”

Congress leader Partap Bajwa too condemned the incident and targeted Mr Mann for the current law and order situation in the state.

“Peace in Punjab returned after endless sacrifices, no one should be allowed to vitiate the atmosphere of the state. In Punjab people from all religions live together with love and brotherhood,” he said in a post on X.

“There are external forces at play who want to disturb Punjab’s peace once again for their political benefits. Punjab CM stop your theatrics and focus on the law and order of the state, being the Home Minister the buck stops at your door,” said Mr Bajwa.

Zimbabwe vs India: On Virat Kohli’s “Time For Youngsters To Take Over” Remark, Shubman Gill’s Response Viral

India captain Shubman Gill won the toss and opted to bowl against Zimbabwe in the first T20I of a five-match series in Harare on Saturday. Ahead of his captaincy debut, Gill had confirmed on the eve of the match that Abhishek Sharma will make his debut and open the innings with him. Apart from Abhishek, IPL stars Riyan Parag and Dhruv Jurel were also handed their debuts by the Indian team. Gill is leading the team in the absence of captain Rohit Sharma, who retired from the format after the T20 World Cup, while vice-captain Hardik Pandya has been rested.

Star India batter Virat Kohli also announced his T20I retirement after the final, suggesting that it’s time for the new generation to take over.

On being asked if there’s any pressure on him after Kohli’s remark, Gill said at the toss: ” Don’t feel pressure, you have expectations but from yourself, not from outside.”

“We want to have a look at the target and have the runs on the board. World Cup has been long coming, winning after 11 years. Very satisfied, hope many more to come. Three debutants: Abhishek, Riyan, Jurel,” Gill said at the toss in Harare.

Zimbabwe skipper Sikandar Raza said during the time of the toss, “I don’t mind batting first. The wicket looks good. Zimbabwe Cricket has trusted me with this transition phase. I look for young boys to come out and fight. It is humbling to lead this bunch. Sean has retired. It is a young side. Ervine will have a role in the future.”

Veep Jagdeep Dhankhar Comeback To P Chidambaram’s Jab

P Chidambaram’s remark is an inexcusable insult to the wisdom of Parliament, Jagdeep Dhankhar said (File)

Thiruvananthapuram:

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar lashed out at Congress MP P Chidambaram today over his comment that the three new criminal laws were “drafted by part-timers”, terming it “inexcusable” and urging him to withdraw his “derogatory, defamatory and insulting” observation.

Mr Dhankhar said he was “shocked beyond words” when in the morning he read Chidambaram’s interview to a leading national daily in which he had said that “the new laws were drafted by part-timers”.

“Are we part-timers in Parliament? It is an inexcusable insult to the wisdom of Parliament… I do not have words strong enough to condemn such a narrative being set afloat and an MP being labelled as a part-timer.

“I appeal to him (Chidambaram) from this platform, please withdraw this derogatory, defamatory, and highly insulting observation about the Members of Parliament (MPs). I hope he does,” the Vice President said addressing the 12th convocation of the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST) in Thiruvananthapuram.

“When informed minds knowingly lead you astray, we need to be on guard,” Mr Dhankhar further said.

“This morning, when I read a paper, an informed mind, who had been the Finance Minister of this country, a Parliamentarian for long, and currently a member of the Rajya Sabha, stunned me,” the VP said.

He said that he took pride in the fact that the Parliament did “a great thing” by “unshackling us from the colonial legacy” and giving three laws that were of “epochal dimension”.

The Veep, also the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, said that every MP had the opportunity to contribute when the three laws – the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and the Bharatiya Saksha Adhiniyam – were being debated in the House.

“With a heavy heart, I am sharing with you, that this honourable gentleman, a distinguished member of Parliament who has a great background as finance minister, did not use his lung power. He gave total rest to his vocal chords while debate was going on,” he said.

P Chidambaram must hold himself accountable for the “failure of duty on your part, an act of omission/commission, dereliction of duty, which can never be explained”, Mr Dhankhar said.

No problem with institution but with personalities: Gandapur

RAWALPINDI: Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Ali Amin Gandapur Saturday said that they have no problem with the “institution” but do have differences with personalities.

Talking to the media in Rawalpindi, Gandapur said that there was no accountability and punishment system in the country while the nation was looking towards the judiciary.

However, he claimed that the whole nation knows that there is pressure on the judiciary while the judiciary has been told if there is pressure on them, they should tell the nation which will stand with them. “The Chief Justice of Pakistan should recuse himself from cases against us,” he maintained.

The KP chief minister said that there was talk in the apex committee about Azm-e-Istehkam but not an operation. He added if there was to be an operation, parliament and the people should be taken on board. “We have no problem with the institution, we have disagreements with personalities. Supremacy of law in the country is necessary and first of all, our mandate should be returned.” Gandapur said that nothing has come out in the fake cases against PTI founder and others. On the question of dialogue, he contended that Imran Khan has been saying that he was ready for negotiations but first withdraw the ‘fake cases’ and then negotiations will take place.

Regarding the government’s all parties conference, he explained that the decision to participate in the APC had been taken by the party founder and the party will participate in the event and present its viewpoint. “It is not a joke that you just do whatever comes to your mind. Pakistan has a Constitution and there is also a procedure, which will have to be followed,” he maintained.

He alleged what the Federation is doing is against the Constitution and judiciary. “We will hold a rally and the administration should implement the court orders. Under the Constitution, we have the right to hold rallies, processions and protests,” he remarked. Gandapur claimed the government was on crutches and they don’t have the mandate and that it will be dismissed if there is a fair trial in the judiciary.

On the question about former chief minister Pervez Khattak, the KP chief minister said that “he left the party, forgot favors and became a thief and now if he gives false testimony, he will not move about smoking like this.”

Gandapur said they had regarded (chief minister Punjab) as a woman but if a decision was taken to file a case against her, it will be done. He pointed out that cases had been filed against Nawaz Sharif and President Asif Ali Zardari and a case against Nawaz Sharif was filed in the Cantt Police Station in a legal way but there was no system of punishment in the country. Gandapur also demanded death penalty for those who ‘broke’ the Constitution.

Ex-India Star, Snubbed By USA For T20 World Cup, Takes Major League Cricket 2024 By Storm

Unmukt Chand scored 68 off 45 balls in the first MLC 2024 game.© X (Twitter)

Remember Unmukt Chand? Once the captain of an U19 World Cup-winning India side, the right-handed top order batsman has been through many ups and downs since. Now, despite changing to US citizenship, Chand was left out of the USA squad that shocked everyone and reached the Super 8 of the 2024 T20 World Cup. However, Chand, 31, has a point to prove, and started off the second season of Major League Cricket (MLC) – USA’s franchise T20 league – with a swashbuckling half-century.

Interestingly, Chand’s present MLC franchise is Los Angeles Knight Riders (LAKR), who are owned by the Knight Riders group. Many might remember that Chand’s downfall started when he was famously clean bowled by Kolkata Knight Riders pacer Brett Lee in the opening ball of IPL 2013.

After finishing bottom of the table in the first season of MLC last year, LAKR required a strong start to MLC 2024. Chand, coming in to bat at no. 3, took charge in the opening match against Texas Super Kings, after openers Jason Roy and Sunil Narine had been dismissed for two runs each.

Chand made 68 off 45 balls, hitting six 4s and three 6s. No other batter in the LAKR lineup crossed 30, and only one crossed 20. It was Chand’s effort that took LAKR to a respectable total of 162/7.

Star names like David Miller and Andre Russell failed to score big as well. Russell only made 10, while Miller was out for four after his T20 World Cup final heartbreak.

In response, Texas Super Kings (TSK) fell short by 12 runs. Frontline USA pacer Ali Khan dismantled the TSK middle order, picking up three wickets, that saw TSK lose four wickets in five balls between the 14th and 15th over.

Los Angeles Knight Riders next play San Francisco Unicorns on July 8.

NEW DELHI: With the draft dates for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan have been released, reports have emerged that the Indian men’s cricket team is unlikely to travel to Pakistan next year.

According to a report published by Sports Tak on 6 July, the Men in Blue will not travel to Pakistan for the ICC Champions Trophy that will begin from 19 February to 9 March.

“While the details of the tournament have not yet been discussed, it is highly unlikely that the Indian team will travel to Pakistan. Ultimately, the decision rests with the Indian government. However, the Pakistan Cricket Board plans to raise this issue at the upcoming ICC meeting in Sri Lanka this month,” Sports Tak quoted a source as saying. “The government’s decision on this matter will be final, as we have not yet confirmed it internally. Since this is an ICC event, we do not have the authority to make any unilateral decisions. However, more details may emerge during the next ICC meeting,” he added.

Since 2008, India have not travelled to Pakistan and met only once for a bilateral series on 2012–13. Though India were supposed to travel to Pakistan in 2023 for the Asia Cup, the tournament took place in a hybrid mode, with India’s matches, including the final, were played in Sri Lanka.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had furnished its draft for the Champions Trophy 2025, where the board assigned seven matches to Lahore, five to Rawalpindi and three to Karachi.

India and Pakistan match will take place at the iconic Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on March 1, according to the draft. “The PCB has submitted the draft of the 15-match ICC Champions Trophy. Seven games in Lahore, three in Karachi and five in Rawalpindi,” the ICC source said. “The opening match will be held in Karachi, with two semifinals in Karachi and Rawalpindi and final in Lahore. All India matches (including semifinals, if the team qualifies) will be played in Lahore,” the source added.
