Mumbai:

Bigg Boss OTT 3 contestant Armaan Malik slapped his co-housemate Vishal Pandey in the controversial reality show. In the Weekend Ka Vaar episode, Armaan’s first wife and former contestant Payal Malik made a surprise visit. However, she confronted Vishal about his comments on Armaan’s second wife Kritika Malik, who too is a contestant in the show. “What you said about Kritika is unacceptable! She’s a mother and a wife, and you need to respect that,” Payal told Vishal.

Vishal, who had previously confessed his feelings for Kritika, said: “I like Kritika, and I feel guilty about it.” After Payal left, Armaan went to talk to Vishal about the same and the two had an argument. The argument led to using abusive language for each other and then in the heat of the moment Armaan slapped Vishal.

Other contestants intervened and tried to stop the fight between the two.

Physical assault is not allowed in Bigg Boss. If the rule is broken, the contestants involved are evicted on an immediate basis.

It is unclear as of now if Armaan has been shown the exit door or not. Details for the same are still under wraps.

Bigg Boss OTT 3 airs on Jiocinema Premium.

ISLAMABAD: Local and international firms working in Pakistan’s oil and gas exploration and production (E&P) sector have announced an investment of US$5 billion during the next three years in the country. The announcement was made in a meeting, presided over by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday, at the PM House.

A representative delegation of companies told the meeting that during the next three years, around 240 places would be drilled with an investment of $5 billion to explore petroleum and gas in Pakistan.

The prime minister constituted a committee under the chairmanship of Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, which would include experts, secretaries and relevant authorities. The committee, after consultation with representatives of the sector, would formulate proposals to create attractive policy for exploration and development of petroleum and gas reserves in Pakistan.

PM Shehbaz directed the relevant authorities to solve all problems of the sector and submit policy proposals to the constituted committee on priority.

The meeting was informed that currently, Pakistan’s domestic production stood at 70,998 barrels of petroleum products and 3,131mmscfd gas per day. The PM invited petroleum and gas exploration and production companies to also find the offshore reserves.

State Bank of Pakistan Governor Jamil Ahmed told the meeting that on the prime minister’s special instructions, all remittances had been sent to the respective countries of oil and gas production companies.

Later, PM Shehbaz Sharif said, “I am well aware of the concerns and worries of people regarding increase in electricity prices, and I am working day and night to give relief to people in this regard.” He disclosed that work was under way to provide relief to those consuming 200 or 300 units of electricity per month, like the 100-unit consumers.

In response to a question, he said that the independent power producers (IPPs) agreements were also being worked on. “Our ministry and team are working on it; we expect positive results,” he added.

In response to another question, he said operation ‘Azm-e-Istehkam’ was needed for peace and stability. “Now, even Tehreek-e-Insaf has agreed to participate in the all parties conference being held on the issue soon,” PM Shehbaz said adding, “It will not only have far-reaching results, but it is also expected to end terrorism in the country.”

PM Shehbaz Sharif said everyone should consider it as a national duty to bring peace and stability in the country. “If there is peace and stability, the doors of foreign investment will be opened,” he added. He hoped that all national parties would participate in the all parties conference with positive proposals and with an open heart.

The PM said there was a useful discussion with Russian President Putin. “Hope he will visit Pakistan soon,” he added. “We want to import more oil from Russia.”

He said the painful situation in Gaza was also discussed in the organisation’s summit, “which is part of our policy, as is our long-standing and consistent policy on atrocities in Kashmir”.

The PM said: “We made it clear that Afghanistan should take measures against terrorism. In the APC, we will take everyone into confidence on all matters related to it.”

Meanwhile, PM Shehbaz Sharif ordered strict action against officers and personnel charging excess units in electricity bills. He asked the Power Division to immediately suspend such officers and personnel of the distribution companies (DISCOs) and conduct an investigation against them through the FIA “as they were enemies of people”.

The PM chaired a meeting regarding reforms in power sector and solarisation on Saturday. He directed to unmask those who had sent extra units to protected consumers category using less than 200 units per month. He also ordered for immediate closure of dysfunctional government-run power units and those which had been producing expensive electricity.

Separately, PM Shehbaz Sharif chaired a meeting to review implementation of agreements and MoUs signed between Pakistan and China. The PM said that recently a delegation of Chinese shoe-manufacturing companies had visited Pakistan with regard to relocation of their plants in Pakistan, adding that such companies had the capacity to invest about 5 to 8 billion dollars in Pakistan, PM Office Media Wing said in a press release.

He said the local shoe manufacturers association was in constant contact with the Chinese companies in this regard. Moreover, he said about 12 renowned Chinese companies related to agriculture sector would be taking active part in the Food and Agri Expo being held in Pakistan.

The PM also reviewed progress on sending a total of 1,000 Pakistan students on government scholarships to China for latest training in the agriculture sector. He ordered for sending students from the backward areas of Balochistan province on priority basis.

The prime minister directed Wapda authorities for establishment of safe centre for fool-proof security arrangements of Chinese nationals working on Dasu and Diamer Bhasha dams. The PM also asked for accelerating negotiation process with the Chinese manufacturing companies for relocation of solar panels and its accessories units to Pakistan.

Slashing bloated bureaucracy a real challenge for Shehbaz

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is faced with the challenge of outdoing bureaucracy, which has thwarted successive governments’ efforts to slash the bloated size of federal government.

Doubts have already been created by the prime minister’s decision of ignoring the recommendation of two austerity committees, which he himself had formed earlier, and assigning a third one under the chairmanship of finance minister to right-size the federal government.

Informed sources said the federal cabinet during the PTI government had approved a major restructuring plan for the federal government and had decided to retain 325 federal government entities out of the total 441. However, despite the cabinet’s approval, the plan remained unimplemented because of bureaucracy’s reluctance.

The cabinet approval of the PTI government, it is said, is still valid and can be implemented by the present regime if it has the political will. The Shehbaz Sharif government is under pressure from the media and political parties to curtail its own expenditures instead of imposing more and more taxes on the people. On the recommendation of the-then Dr Ishrat Hussain-led Task Force on Institutional Reforms, the Imran Khan cabinet had approved the privatisation or transfer of 43 government entities to Sarmaya Pakistan Ltd, transfer of 15 bodies to provincial governments, Islamabad Capital Territory and Gilgit-Baltistan, liquidation or closure of eight organisations and merger of 32 entities.

The PTI cabinet had approved the proposal for the reorganisation of 17 bodies as training and policy support institutes. The government, it was decided, would retain 325 entities under two broad categories: (a) Executive departments, and (b) Autonomous bodies.

The IK government’s Task Force on Austerity and Restructuring of Government had reviewed 441 organisations of federal government and had classified these entities into 18 categories, which included constitutional bodies, regulatory authorities, courts/tribunals, commercial/semi-commercial organisations, public utilities/services providers, promotion bodies, financial institutions, training institutes, research/data/documentation organisations, education institutions, quality assurance bodies, development authorities, councils/commissions/committees, trusts/foundations, executive agencies, security/enforcement bodies, scientific research institutes and others. For the execution of the approved restructuring plan, the PTI cabinet had even sanctioned the implementation plan, which however had failed to deliver because of bureaucracy’s resistance.

Dr Ishrat Hussain had left the PTI government with a frustrated mind as his major reform work despite having been approved by the cabinet remained unimplemented because of lack of political will of the then government.

In 2021, the government was informed that despite devolution, the number of federal employees had increased as statistics showed a sudden jump of 137,000 new entrants took place in 2016-17.

The PTI government was informed by Dr Ishrat Hussain that in 2010-11, the total number of federal employees was 829,000 and this strength remained largely steady until 2016-17 when a sudden jump of 137,000 new entrants took place, raising the total number to 966,000.

Most of the new recruitment 116,000 (85 percent), it was said, took place in the federal government (Secretariat and attached departments) while the increase in the autonomous bodies was 21,000. Like the last Austerity Committee of the Shehbaz Sharif government, the PTI government’s Task Force on reforms had also recommended abolition of 71,000 posts lying vacant for a year or more but it was not done. The Shehbaz Sharif government also ignored the recommendation and recently referred it to the new committee under the finance minister.

Shubman Gill Delivers Brutally Honest Verdict On India’s Shocking Loss To Zimbabwe In 1st T20I

Shubman Gill Delivers Brutally Honest Verdict On Indias Shocking Loss To Zimbabwe In 1st T20I

Indian cricket team captain Shubman Gill© X (formerly Twitter)

A new-look Indian cricket team slumped to a shocking loss against Zimbabwe in their first T20I encounter in Harare on Saturday. Ravi Bishnoi took four wickets while Washington Sundar took two as Zimbabwe could only manage to score 115/9 in 20 overs. In response, the Indian cricket team batters lost the plot completely as the visitors kept losing wickets at regular intervals and were all out for just 102. India skipper Shubman Gill criticised his side’s fielding after the 13-run loss and also said that after losing five wickets early, he himself should have stayed till the end to finish the match for his side.

“We bowled pretty well, we let ourselves down in the field. We were not up to standard and everyone looked a bit rusty. We spoke about taking time and enjoying our batting but it didn’t pan out that way. Halfway through we had lost 5 wickets, would’ve been best for us if I stayed there till the end, very disappointed with the way I got out and the rest of the match panned out. There was a bit of hope for us but when you’re chasing 115 and your no.10 batter is out there, you know something is wrong,” Gill said.

Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza was ecstatic with his team’s display and said that it was not a low-scoring surface and it was the calibre of the bowlers that did not allow the batters to score a lot of runs.

“Feel really happy about the win. Need to take one game at a time. The job is not done, series is not over. World champions play like world champions so we need to be ready for the next game. This isn’t a wicket where you get bowled out for 115. Credit to the bowlers of both sides. Clearly an indication we need to up our skills. I said I don’t care about the result as long as we could be true to the crowd and changing room, we had our plans, we stuck to it and we backed our guys. Our catching and ground fielding was amazing but we did make some errors, shows there’s room for improvement. We knew the fans would lift us up and give us energy, credit to them, it helped us,” Raza said at the post-match presentation.

Anti-migration protest attracts hundreds

TENERIFE, SPAIN:

Hundreds protested Saturday in the Canary Islands against an influx of migrants to the Spanish archipelago, which has welcomed more than 19,000 migrants since the beginning of 2024.

Located off the coast of northwest Africa, the Canary Islands have become an increasingly popular destination for migrants braving the perilous Atlantic crossing in the hope of finding a better life in Europe.

Carrying “Defend our neighbourhoods” and “Stop illegal immigration” placards, the demonstrators took to the streets of towns including Las Palmas and Santa Cruz de Tenerife, with local media putting their numbers at several hundred.

“This situation in the Canaries is unbearable,” Juan Manuel Garcia, who took part in the demonstration in Tenerife, told AFPTV.

“The Canaries don’t have the means to support those who arrive,” the 70-year-old added.

Rudy Ruyman, who helped organise the demonstration, said that the situation had become “a traffic in human lives”, warning that “the mafia is profiting from all the deaths at sea”.

Rwanda migrant plan ‘dead and buried’

LONDON:

Newly elected UK prime minister Keir Starmer on Saturday began his first full day in charge declaring the ousted Tories’ plan to deport migrants to Rwanda “dead and buried” and pledging growth as his government’s “number one mission”.

The Labour leader on Friday won a landslide election victory bringing to a close 14 years of Conservative rule.

He said he was “restless for change” and that his party had received a “mandate to do politics differently”.

Starmer started the day with a first meeting of his cabinet including Britain’s first woman finance minister Rachel Reeves and new foreign minister David Lammy.

“We have a huge amount of work to do, so now we get on with our work,” he told his top team to applause and smiles around the cabinet table.

At a news conference afterwards he said he would not be proceeding with former Conservative prime minister Rishi Sunak’s controversial scheme to tackle rising small boat arrivals on England’s southern coast by deporting migrants to Rwanda.

“The Rwanda scheme was dead and buried before it started… I’m not prepared to continue with gimmicks that don’t act as a deterrent,” he told reporters at his 10 Downing Street office.

Starmer spent his first hours in Downing Street on Friday appointing his ministerial team, hours after securing his centre-left party’s return to power with a whopping 174-seat majority in the UK parliament.

Notable lower-ranking appointments included Patrick Vallance, chief scientific government adviser during the Covid-19 pandemic, who has been made a science minister.

James Timpson, whose shoe repair company employs ex-offenders, was also made a prisons minister.

Starmer said both new ministers were people “associated with change” and illustrated his determination to deliver concrete improvements to people’s lives.

Work on “driving growth” had already begun, he said, adding that he had told his ministers “exactly what I expect of them in terms of standards, delivery, and the trust that the country has put in them”.

Flag-waving crowds of cheering Labour activists on Friday welcomed Starmer to Downing Street hours after his victory.

But daunting challenges await his government, including a stagnating economy, creaking public services and households suffering from a years-long cost-of-living crisis.

World leaders lined up to congratulate the new British premier.

France in for crunch poll

PARIS:

France on Saturday prepared for its most consequential legislative election of recent times, with residents of overseas territories opening voting for a poll expected to give the far right its biggest ever presence in parliament.

A traditional final day pause was observed on Saturday ahead of Sunday’s second round runoff after a frenetic campaign that saw tensions rise across the country and dozens of attacks on candidates.

Underlining France’s global footprint that spans the oceans of the world, the first French region to vote was Saint Pierre and Miquelon, a small French archipelago off the coast of Canada where citizens began voting from 1000 GMT.

They were followed by residents of French Caribbean territories including Martinique and Guadeloupe as well as Guiana in South America.

French Pacific territories come next before people in mainland France cast their ballots from 0600 GMT on Sunday.

Polls will close by 1800 GMT on Sunday when projections of seat numbers — regarded in France as a firm indicator of the final outcome — are published.

Final opinion polls on Friday suggested that far-right leader Marine Le Pen’s National Rally (RN) would fall short of winning an outright 289 seat majority in the 577-member National Assembly while being the largest party ahead of the New Popular Front (NFP) left-wing coalition.

Yet President Emmanuel Macron’s gamble in calling snap elections could end with his centrist alliance having approximately half the number of deputies it had before the elections and the RN double.

The final opinion polls published by two organisations Friday projected the RN would win between 170-210 seats, followed by the New Popular Front left-wing coalition on 145-185 seats and Macron’s centrists on 118-150 seats.

Cognitive concerns mount after Biden slip

WASHINGTON:

Amid growing concerns and pressure over his cognitive decline, US President Joe Biden found himself in hot water again after a verbal slip-up.

Speaking to Philadelphia’s WURD radio station, the 81-year-old president said he was “proud” to be the “first Black woman to serve with a Black president.”

In his latest verbal blunder, Biden mixed up his words while referring to his vice president, Kamala Harris, and former president Barack Obama. “By the way, I’m proud to be, as I said, the first vice president, first Black woman, to serve with a Black president,” he said.

Biden likely got his wires crossed, as he had earlier mentioned being the first vice president to serve under a Black president. He also spoke about being the first president to have a Black woman as vice president and appointing Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, the first Black woman to serve on the Supreme Court.

This slip-up comes hot on the heels of Biden’s recent debate with former US president Donald Trump, which was littered with verbal gaffes and confusing statements.

Biden is now under increasing pressure to bow out of the presidential race. A poll by Reuters and Ipsos revealed that one in three Democrats think Biden should step aside.

On Friday, Biden also misspoke in front of a crowd of supporters while trying to put to bed concerns over his age and cognitive abilities, insisting that his rival Donald Trump also makes gaffes.

Biden opened his speech in Madison, Wisconsin, with a dig at Trump, recalling how the former president once claimed in a Fourth of July speech that the Continental Army “took over the airports” from the British.

“Let me say this as clearly as I can: I’m staying in the race! I’ll beat Donald Trump; I will beat him again in 2020!” Biden declared to loud cheers and applause from the crowd.

Realising his mistake, he corrected himself five seconds later, saying, “And by the way, we’re going to do it again in 2024,” met with a lone “Yeah!” from the crowd.

In an interview with ABC News aired later that day, Biden sidestepped questions about whether he would take a neurological test to prove his fitness for the job, stating that his busy schedule of “campaigning” and “running the world” serves as a daily cognitive test for him. As Biden tries to stay in the game, his verbal gaffes continue to fuel debates about his capability to lead, with calls for him to take a more comprehensive cognitive test growing louder.

Biden defiant, but critics are circling

Meanwhile, Joe Biden’s presidential re-election bid hung in the balance Saturday, after efforts to put a disastrous debate showing behind him failed to silence voices urging that he quit the White House race.

In what had been billed as a make-or-break TV interview on Friday, Biden’s strategy was to flatly deny the falling poll numbers and concerns over his mental and physical fitness triggered by his dismal performance against rival Donald Trump.

He blamed a severe cold for the debate debacle and insisted it was just a “bad night” rather than evidence of increasing frailty and cognitive decline.

And the 81-year-old was adamant that he would not be pressured to end his campaign.

“If the Lord Almighty came down and said, ‘Joe, get out of the race,’ I’d get out of the race,” he said. “But the Lord Almighty is not coming down.” Calls for less divine intervention do, however, appear to be strengthening.

Murmurs of dissent within his own Democratic party have — in the case of five individual House representatives —  morphed into direct calls to quit, and a number of key donors have threatened to cut off funding if Biden insists on staying the course. (With input from AFP)

$5b investment firmed up in oil & gas sector

ISLAMABAD:

The local and international firms of Pakistan’s oil and gas exploration and production (E&P) sector, expressing confidence over the leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday, announced an investment of $5 billion during next three years in the country.

The announcement was made in a meeting presided over by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at PM House. A delegation of oil and gas exploration and production sector companies told the meeting that during three years, around 240 places would be excavated with an investment of $5 billion to explore petroleum and gas in Pakistan.

The prime minister constituted a committee under the chairmanship of Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar that would include experts, secretaries and the relevant authorities. The committee, after consultation with the representatives of the sector, would formulate proposals to create attractive policy for the exploration and development of petroleum and gas reserves in Pakistan.

The prime minister directed the relevant authorities to solve all the problems of the sector, and submit policy proposals to the constituted committee on priority. The delegation thanked the prime minister for making the petroleum and gas exploration and production sector, a part of the consultation process, listening to their problems and finding serious solutions to them.

The meeting was informed that currently, Pakistan’s domestic production stood at 70998 barrels and 3131MMSCFD gas per day. The prime minister invited petroleum and gas exploration and production companies to also find the offshore reserves.

Exploring the oil and gas reserves at the local level in Pakistan is our top priority, PM Shehbaz said adding that Pakistan spent billions of dollars every year on importing oil and gas.

“Production from local reserves will save Pakistan’s valuable foreign exchange and fuel and gas will become affordable for the common man,” the prime minister added. He directed the authorities concerned to provide solutions to all the problems of the sector on a priority basis.

Governor State Bank of Pakistan Jamil Ahmed told the meeting that on the prime minister’s special instructions, all the remittances (profit of the business) had been sent to the respective countries of the oil and gas production companies.

The meeting was attended by Deputy PM Ishaq Dar, Federal Ministers Ahad Khan Cheema, Muhammad Aurangzeb, Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi, Engineer Amir Muqaam, Ahsan Iqbal, Sardar Awais Khan Leghari, Deputy Chairman Planning Commission Jehanzeb Khan, Coordinator to PM Rana Ehsaan Afzal, Chairman Federal Board of Revenue Amjad Zubair Tiwana, representatives of domestic and international companies and relevant high officials.

Electricity bills

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday decided to take strict action against the officials and other employees involved in charging excess units in electricity bills.

The prime minister chaired a meeting regarding reforms in power sector and solarisation process, PM Office Media Wing said in a press release.

He directed the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to identify such officials and employees so they could be suspended to face further strict action.

“They [these officials and employees] are enemies of the people,” PM Shehbaz noted. “This criminal act [of charging excessive units] will not be tolerated at any cost,” he added.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar, federal ministers Jam Kamal Khan, Sardar Awais Khan Leghari, Ahsan Iqbal, Ahad Khan Cheema, Attaullah Tarar, Minister of State Ali Pervaiz Malik and relevant senior officials.

The prime minister said that exemplary punishment should be given to those officials who had included extra units in the monthly bills of consumers with their anti-public attitude, besides unmasking them who had sent extra units to the protected consumers category, using less than 200 units per month.

During the meeting, the prime minister directed for accelerating efforts over renewable energy for power generation, adding that Pakistan could no longer afford to generate power on imported fuel.

He also expressed his resolve not to pass on the buck to the poor segment of society of the wrong policies measures of the past.

The prime minister said that the consumers would get relief in their monthly bills after utilization of affordable renewable energy resources for power generation.

He directed for immediate closure of dysfunctional government-run power units and those which had been producing expensive electricity.

The prime minister observed that the world was generating power by using renewable energy, adding in Pakistan, there was immense capacity to produce solar power.

He directed for taking of measures to tap solar energy potential on priority basis.

Myanmar general in China

YANGON:

The Myanmar junta’s second-in-command arrived in China on Saturday for an official visit, the junta’s information team said, as clashes with ethnic minority fighters raged in the north of the country despite a Beijing-brokered ceasefire.

Vice-senior General Soe Win arrived in Qingdao in Shandong province where he will attend a “Green Development Forum” hosted by the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, the junta’s information office said in a statement.

Ties between the junta and Beijing – a major ally and arms supplier – frayed last year over the junta’s failure to crack down on online scam compounds in Myanmar’s borderlands.

The compounds were staffed by citizens of China and other countries who were often trafficked and forced to work swindling their compatriots in an industry analysts say is worth billions.
