Pakistan’s javelin throw star Arshad Nadeem had a heartwarming message for Neeraj Chopra’s mother after she said that he was “like her son”. Nadeem scripted history by becoming the first athlete from Pakistan to win an individual Olympics gold medal as he claimed the top prize in men’s javelin at the Paris Olympics 2024. Nadeem came up with a mammoth 92.97m throw to break the Olympic record and it was enough to beat Neeraj who could only manage to win silver with his season-best throw of 89.45m. Following the event, Neeraj’s mother – Saroj Devi – was asked about Nadeem and she said that he is also like a son to her. Nadeem responded to her statement and said that he was grateful for the fact that she prayed for him as well and said that she is also like a mother to him.

“A mother is a mother for everyone, so she prays for everyone too. I’m grateful to Neeraj Chopra’s mother. Woh bhi meri maa hai (She’s my mother too). She prayed for us, and we were just two players from South Asia who performed on the world stage,” Nadeem told Pakistani media after returning home.

Pakistan will honour the ace athlete Arshad Nadeem with Hilal-e-Imtiaz, the second-highest award of the country, for his stupendous feat at the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024.

The government also directed for a commemorative stamp titled ‘Azm-e-Istehkam’ (commitment to stability) to be issued on the occasion of the 77th Independence Day next week.

The 27-year-old won the gold at the elite men’s javelin throw competition with a mammoth 92.97 m throw on Thursday at Paris which broke the Olympic record of 90.57 m set at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. It is the first individual gold in 40 years for the country.

Following the directive by President Asif Ali Zardari, his office sent a letter to the Cabinet Division for the formal conferment of the award, according to state media.

“Arshad Nadeem’s remarkable performance has made the nation proud on the global stage. His outstanding success in athletics is a source of pride for the country,” President Zardari stated in his letter.

Inadequate relief measures

Inadequate relief measures

This refers to the letter ‘Unpayable’ (August 3, 2024) by Dr Irfan Zafar. I fully endorse the views of the writer on the exorbitant electricity bills and the inadequacy of simply extending the payment deadline as a means of relief.

The same can be said for the federal energy minister’s prediction of a potential decrease of 2-3 per cent per unit of electricity by January next year given stable economic factors. People are much more aware about public affairs now than in the past and cannot be fooled anymore.

True change

True change

The latest fiasco in Bangladesh is an old story for the people of the subcontinent. Though one wishes for a different ending to this liberation movement, if the past is any guide, the liberators in this part of the world are seldom motivated by ideology.

They are mostly just jumping on a bandwagon and trying to capitalize on the shifting winds. One can only pray and hope that the subcontinent gets motivated and sincere liberators who are guided by an ideology and live and die by it.

BJP Slams Rahul Gandhi For Seeding Doubt About Indian Stock Markets

BJP Slams Rahul Gandhi For 'Seeding Doubt' About Indian Stock Markets

New Delhi:

The BJP today slammed Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for raising questions on the integrity of Indian stock markets based on the latest allegations by  US-based short seller Hindenburg.

“The Leader of Opposition is now openly inciting and seeding doubt about the genuineness of the Indian stock markets. This blatant attempt to undermine confidence in our economy reveals the true intention of Rahul Gandhi, which is nothing but the destruction of India,” BJP leader Amit Malviya said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

He said that Mr Gandhi’s remarks come despite the expert committee appointed by the Supreme Court concluding there was no regulatory failure regarding the allegations of price manipulation made by Hindenburg.

“On Jan 3, 2024, the Supreme Court, led by CJI DY Chandrachud, observed that no willful or deliberate violations were done by SEBI,” Mr Malviya said.

Rahul Gandhi had alleged that there was significant risk in the Indian stock markets and that the “integrity” of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) was “gravely compromised” by the allegations against its chairperson.

The new Hindenburg report claimed that SEBI Chairperson Madhabi Puri Buch and her husband Dhaval Buch had stakes in offshore entities involved in the alleged Adani money siphoning scandal.

The SEBI Chairman and the Adani Group, however, have labelled these allegations as “baseless” and “malicious”. Madhabi Puri Buch has also pointed out that the latest release by Hindenburg comes after SEBI took enforcement action and issued a show-cause notice to them in July.

E-Office project still a pipe dream

ISLAMABAD: The much-hyped E-Office project for the placement of paperless functioning and decision-making among 40 federal ministries has not seen the light at the end of the tunnel during the last two decades.

Now the Prime Minister’s Office has highlighted major flaws in the latest endeavours for implementing E-Office undertaken by the National Information Technology Board (NITB).

Official documents and background interviews by The News revealed on Sunday that the PM Office took a serious notice of the unwarranted delay in implementing the E-Office and found that some major flaws existed.

The premier was told that the scrutiny of the project revealed that the software’s User Interface was designed with multiple features, but the UI should have been developed with only two to three options. Excessive options led to confusion. One of the reasons that after so many years, ministries and government officers are reluctant to give up paper is due to the confusing UI of the E-Office.

The E-Office was aimed at transforming from a paper-based to a paperless transition, but the system mirrors paper-based processes, negating digitalisation’s benefits. A user-centric approach has not been applied in the E-Office system as there is no element of feedback from users.

A search function is essential for any E-Office system. The existing system cannot provide modern search capabilities, requiring users to open each file to search its contents. There is non-compliance with the Electronic Transaction Ordinance (ETO) 2002. The E-Office does not adhere to ETO 2002 standards. Approved documents must undergo e-signing and e-sealing (digital certification) for tamper-proofing and legal compliance. This is a serious concern and must be addressed immediately, as it compromises a major feature and makes the government non-compliant with local and international standards. It also exposes the system to approval fraud and misuse of official documents and signatures, which are placed with copy-paste methods.

The system’s reliance on a licenced Oracle platform poses licencing costs and expertise challenges. Additionally, hosting the system on a data center with various bottlenecks impacts performance. Several other major flaws were identified by industry experts.

Upon further investigation, it was found that the E-Office system suffers from a variety of issues, starting with a poorly designed and overly complex user interface that falls short of industry standards. A fundamental requirement for any professional system is that it should be simple and effective, yet E-Office fails to meet this criterion. The international standard for technology adoption is around 80 to 85 percent, with users starting to use the system. However, E-Office failed to attract more than 50 percent of users, who also complain about poor processes, poor functionality and poor UI.

The prime minister was displeased with the slow progress and quality of the E-Office development. In response, he directed the Ministry of IT to either rectify the issues immediately or shut down the system altogether.

Following this directive, the ministry hired industry experts to conduct a system review and work with the main vendors to fix the system’s problems.

Although these experts reportedly completed many of the pending tasks, the project hit another roadblock due to a change at the secretary level. As a result, the project has once again fallen victim to negligence and incompetence. The main vendors and subcontractors, including project staff, complain of poor or no response from the CEO of NITB, who does not make decisions nor fulfill his written or verbal commitments with the vendors and project staff.

In a large ministry-wide meeting chaired by the secretary of MoITT, where the E-Office vendor was also invited to address the slow and poor performance of the E-Office solution, the vendor blamed the CEO of NITB entirely for not replying, not paying, or not taking any interest in the project. Upon this complaint, the CEO of NITB’s dashboard was examined, where over 100 cases were pending since January 2024. That was the reason none of the projects under the CEO of NITB could be completed. Sources say the secretary of IT warned the CEO of NITB to clear his pending work and start making decisions, or the ministry will be forced to take action.

When this scribe contacted the CEO of NITB, Babar Majeed Bhatti, and sought his comments, he said that he was hired in NITB almost two years back and they developed and placed E-Office-related software among all 40 ministries at the federal level. He said that there was an element of adoptability for which they organised around 30,000 training programmes but conceded that there was resistance to implementing the system fully. He said that there were some standalone ministries, such as the Foreign Office or the Ministry of Information Technology, where the majority of work was done through the E-government system. He said that digital signatures would be developed at a later stage, probably after six months, but other priorities would be implemented first.

Babar said he proposed major changes as he placed 25 officials of bureaucracy in the surplus pool of the Establishment Division. There is a need to revamp the NITB or close down this entity, he concluded.

Bangladesh Hindus Protest Targeted Violence, Muhammad Yunus Calls Attacks “Heinous”

Bangladesh Hindus Protest Targeted Violence, Muhammad Yunus Calls Attacks 'Heinous'

Members of Bangladesh Hindu, Buddha, Christian Unity Council protest against violence towards minorities.

New Delhi:

The Hindu community in Bangladesh spending anxious hours in the wake of resignation of Awami League leader Sheikh Hasina as Prime Minister and facing the spillovers of the violent protests over a quota-related issue in the South Asian nation on Sunday came out on streets in large numbers in the port city of Chittagong, demanding safety for their lives, properties and places of worship while proclaiming ‘Bangladesh is our motherland and we won’t go anywhere’.

There have been reports of widespread and targeted violence against the Hindus in Bangladesh, with the matter being taken note by the UN which called out the interim Bangladeshi government led by Mohammed Yunus to safeguard the minorities.

Nobel Peace Prize-winning economist Yunus, who was sworn in as the head of Bangladesh’s interim government on Thursday, has also condemned the attacks on the minority communities, terming them as “heinous”.

“Are they not the people of this country? You (students) have been able to save this country; can’t you save some families? They are my brothers… we fought together, and we will stay together,” the Nobel Prize winner told students at a Bangladeshi university recently.

On Sunday, Hindus and other minorities – under the aegis of ‘Bangladesh Hindu, Buddha, Christian Unity Group – took out a massive protest rally against the alleged attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh after Sheikh Hasina resigned in the aftermath of violent protests on August 5 and fled the country. Hindus in Bangladesh have been traditional supporters of Hasina’s Awami League party.

“Our soil, our mother is Bangladesh. We will never leave our mother,” read one of the placards seen during the protest rally.

“Save Bangladeshi Hindu Society. Save Hindus!” another appeal read.

Sunday’s protests saw the participation of people belonging to numerous minorities led by the Hindus, a prominent minority group in the country.

The protesters also waved the Bangladeshi national flag along with a saffron-colour flag depicting Lord Ram with ‘Jai Shri Ram’ written.

He also urged the students, who are at the forefront of the protests, to protect all Hindu, Christian, and Buddhist families from any harm

The protesting Hindus, in Chittagong, also questioned why their places of worship are being attacked.

“We need answers. Why is this happening to us? We want to live in peace. Let us live,” read another placard at the site of the protest rally.

“Why are our sisters and mothers being physically harassed,” another hand-written note on cardboard flashed during the ‘demand for justice rally’ read.

Since August 5, at least 232 people have reportedly died in various attacks and conflicts across Bangladesh while there have also been at least 205 incidents of attacks in 52 districts against the minorities since the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led government.

According to media reports, over 100 Hindus and other minorities have been killed across the country since the fall of the previous government.

The Chittagong protests on Sunday witnessed overwhelming emotions with the minorities expressing their anger, anxiety and apprehensions, with the hope that authorities taking necessary steps to address their worries.

Ironically — considering the current unrest in the country — ‘AMAR SONAR BANGLA’ placard also featured during the protests. Translating to ‘My Golden Bengal’, it is the national anthem of Bangladesh written by the Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore who is also the composer of the Indian national anthem.

Build inclusivity

Build inclusivity

At a convention in Islamabad, the army chief called on scholars and clerics to promote tolerance and unity rather than extremism and discrimination. Our society faces growing challenges from discrimination, intolerance, and extremism, requiring a collective response.

Currently, those who promote anarchy have a significant presence in the country. The state needs to provide space and protection for alternative viewpoints in the country, allowing for diverse perspectives and promoting a more inclusive society.

7 Devotees Die In Stampede During Consecration Event At Bihar Temple

7 Devotees Die In Stampede During Consecration Event At Bihar Temple

Patna:

Seven devotees, including three women, died in a stampede at a temple in Bihar’s Jehanabad district last night allegedly after force was used to control the crowd. At least 35 others suffered injuries in the stampede at the Baba Sidheshwar Nath temple on Baravar hills.

Authorities, however, have denied any negligence on their part.

Diwakar Kumar Vishwakarma, Town Inspector, Jehanabad confirmed seven bodies had arrived at the Jehanabad Post-mortem Hose.

The devotees had gathered at the temple for a consecration event held every year during the holy month of Shravan. Visuals from Jehanabad showed inconsolable families mourning their loss and the injured being treated at the local Makhdumpur and Sadar hospitals.

“Those present at the temple said there was a stampede due to lack of arrangements by the administration. Some NCC (National Cadet Corps) volunteers engaged in crowd management used ‘lathis’ on the devotees, which led to the stampede,” the relative of a victim told reporters.

Locals fear the death count could increase.

A devotee present at the temple said the volunteers resorted to lathi-charge after a fight erupted involving a flower-seller. This led to the stampede, he said, claiming there was no one from the administration.

“This happened due to the negligence of the police administration,” he alleged.

Vikash Kumar, sub-divisional officer (SDO), Jehanabad denied that NCC volunteers used lathis to control the crowd.

“Nothing like that happened. This was an unfortunate incident. There was on strict vigil. Adequate arrangements including force (NCC), civil deputations and medical teams were made. We will give more details after the post-mortem,” said Mr Kumar.

“Responsibility Of Weight Management…”: PT Usha’s Big Take On Vinesh Phogat Row

Drawing criticism for Vinesh Phogat’s weigh-in fiasco, Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha on Sunday made it clear that it is the responsibility of the athlete to manage their weight and the attack on its medical team, especially Chief Medical Officer Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala is “unacceptable and worthy of condemnation.” The 29-year-old Vinesh was left heartbroken after she was disqualified ahead of her gold-medal bout in freestyle 50kg for being 100gm overweight in the morning weigh-in, crushing her Olympic dreams and prompting her to announce her retirement.

The incident started a blame game, also leading to an uproar in the Parliament, with some sections attacking Dr Pardiwala and his team for negligence with former IOA chief Narendra Batra indicating that Vinesh’s diet might have had something to do with her disqualification.

“…the responsibility of weight management of athletes in sport like wrestling, weightlifting, boxing and judo is that of each athlete and his or her coach and NOT that of the IOA-appointed Chief Medical Officer Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala and his team,” Usha said in a statement.

“…the hate directed at the IOA medical team, especially Dr. Pardiwala, is unacceptable and worthy of condemnation.” She hoped that those rushing to judge the IOA medical team “would consider all facts before arriving at any conclusions”.

Vinesh had scripted history by becoming the first Indian woman wrestler to reach the gold medal bout in her category on Tuesday night. But her post-participation weight was found to have increased and despite all measures, which included cutting off Vinesh’s hair, she was found to be 100gm extra during the morning weigh-in.

“Each Indian athlete in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in such sport had his or her own support team. These support teams have been working with the athletes over so many years,” Usha said.

“The IOA appointed a medical team a couple of months ago, primarily as a team that would assist in the recovery and injury management of athletes during and after their competition. This team was also designed to support athletes who did not have their own team of nutritionists and physiotherapists.” Vinesh has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS), demanding that she be awarded a joint silver medal with Cuban wrestler Yusneylis Guzman Lopez, who had lost to the Indian but was later promoted to the final following the Haryana wrestler’s disqualification.

American Sarah Hildebrandt won the gold after defeating Lopez in the title clash.

The decision on Vinesh’s appeal is expected to come on August 13.
