Reynolds and Lively score box office wins with ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ and ‘It Ends With Us’

In a cinematic showdown between Hollywood’s power couple Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively, both emerged victorious at the box office. Reynolds’ “Deadpool & Wolverine” held its top spot for the third consecutive week, amassing $54.2 million in North American ticket sales and crossing the coveted $1 billion mark worldwide.

Not far behind, Lively’s romance drama “It Ends With Us” shattered expectations with an impressive $50 million opening weekend.   

This dynamic duo created a “family edition” of the “Barbenheimer” phenomenon, where two contrasting films thrived due to counter-programming. “Deadpool & Wolverine,” a raucous superhero flick, and “It Ends With Us,” a heartfelt romance based on Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel, attracted diverse audiences, showcasing the couple’s wide-ranging appeal.

While Reynolds and Lively celebrated their success, the weekend also saw a high-profile flop with the long-delayed video game adaptation “Borderlands,” which opened to a disappointing $8.8 million.   

“Deadpool & Wolverine,” directed by Shawn Levy, is now the second R-rated film to cross $1 billion, trailing only “Joker.” It stands as one of the most successful Marvel releases and the second highest-grossing film of the year, behind Disney’s “Inside Out 2.”

Lively’s “It Ends With Us,” which she both stars in and produced, proved to be a profitable venture with its modest $25 million budget. It’s expected to maintain its momentum through August, capitalizing on its strong audience reception.   

Reynolds and Lively playfully acknowledged the convergence of their film releases, further fueling audience interest. Their combined success underscores their star power and the potential for diverse storytelling to capture the hearts of moviegoers.

The season’s trailer teases an epic battle between the forces of good and evil, with new weapons, abilities, and player choices playing a pivotal role.

Epic Games continues its tradition of exciting collaborations, this time bringing the Marvel universe back to Fortnite. Players can expect a thrilling storyline centered around Doctor Doom’s attempt to harness the power of Pandora’s Box, leading to a major conflict where players may choose sides.

‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ writers reveal scrapped scene featuring all the Avengers

In a recent interview with IndieWire, Deadpool & Wolverine co-writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick revealed that an early version of the script included a scene where Deadpool would have faced off with the entire Avengers team. The idea was to have Deadpool, played by Ryan Reynolds, enter a room full of Avengers and then proceed to verbally attack each one in his signature irreverent style.

Wernick described the concept as “a version of what you saw in the sense that [Deadpool] rejected Wade,” but on a much larger scale, with the entire Avengers lineup present. The scene would have featured Deadpool confronting the superheroes, dressing them down in a way only Deadpool could. One of the standout jokes planned for the scene involved Deadpool attempting to lift Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir, with a humorous twist where Peter, the ordinary member of X-Force from Deadpool 2, casually picks up the hammer in the background.

Reese explained that while the scene was never fully written into screenplay pages, it was pitched as an idea early in the development process. However, the logistical challenges of coordinating the schedules of so many high-profile actors, combined with the potential costs, made the scene impractical to produce. “It would’ve been impossible,” Reese admitted. “That’s sort of like the ‘We Are the World’ documentary where they tried to get Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Cyndi Lauper, and Michael Jackson all together at once. Impossible.”

The writers ultimately decided to scale back their ambitions, focusing instead on the characters that could realistically be included. The idea of Deadpool confronting the Avengers remains an intriguing “what if” scenario.
