Pakistan’s javelin throw star Arshad Nadeem had a heartwarming message for Neeraj Chopra’s mother after she said that he was “like her son”. Nadeem scripted history by becoming the first athlete from Pakistan to win an individual Olympics gold medal as he claimed the top prize in men’s javelin at the Paris Olympics 2024. Nadeem came up with a mammoth 92.97m throw to break the Olympic record and it was enough to beat Neeraj who could only manage to win silver with his season-best throw of 89.45m. Following the event, Neeraj’s mother – Saroj Devi – was asked about Nadeem and she said that he is also like a son to her. Nadeem responded to her statement and said that he was grateful for the fact that she prayed for him as well and said that she is also like a mother to him.

“A mother is a mother for everyone, so she prays for everyone too. I’m grateful to Neeraj Chopra’s mother. Woh bhi meri maa hai (She’s my mother too). She prayed for us, and we were just two players from South Asia who performed on the world stage,” Nadeem told Pakistani media after returning home.

Pakistan will honour the ace athlete Arshad Nadeem with Hilal-e-Imtiaz, the second-highest award of the country, for his stupendous feat at the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024.

The government also directed for a commemorative stamp titled ‘Azm-e-Istehkam’ (commitment to stability) to be issued on the occasion of the 77th Independence Day next week.

The 27-year-old won the gold at the elite men’s javelin throw competition with a mammoth 92.97 m throw on Thursday at Paris which broke the Olympic record of 90.57 m set at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. It is the first individual gold in 40 years for the country.

Following the directive by President Asif Ali Zardari, his office sent a letter to the Cabinet Division for the formal conferment of the award, according to state media.

“Arshad Nadeem’s remarkable performance has made the nation proud on the global stage. His outstanding success in athletics is a source of pride for the country,” President Zardari stated in his letter.

A Tour Of Neeraj Chopra’s Panipat House: Swanky Cars, Bikes And A Dog

India’s golden boy Neeraj Chopra could only fetch a silver medal as he looked to defend his title at the Paris Olympic Games 2024 in the men’s javelin throw final. Neeraj was outscored by Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem, who threw an Olympics record-breaking effort of 92.97 meters, stunning the entire sporting fraternity. Despite Neeraj’s lack of success in breaching the 90-meter mark in the Paris Games, he created history, becoming the only athlete of India to bag two track & field medals in consecutive Olympic Games. Considered one of the most focused athletes in the country, Neeraj has already given the country many historic accomplishments. But, little is known about his personal life.

As NDTV reached out to Neeraj’s family in Panipat, we got a glimpse of his luxurious house, his swanky car collection, and the Olympics connection behind the name of his Golden Retriever dog.

Neeraj, who is considered one of the most humble sportspersons in India, has a crazy car collection. He also has a few high-end bikes.

It was also found out that the name of Neeraj’s dog is Tokyo, derived from the ace athlete’s gold medal-winning throw in the previous Olympic Games, which were held in the city.

After his silver medal at the Olympic Games, Neeraj said that he has been competing with Arshad since 2016 and it’s the first time that the Pakistani athlete managed to get the better of him.

“Arshad performed well and I would like to congratulate him. I’ve been competing with him since 2016, and this is the first time he has won while competing together,” said Neeraj after the final.

“Despite the injury, I am pushing myself hard. The throw was good, but I still have a lot left in me, and I need to stay fit to achieve it,” said the Tokyo Olympics gold medallist.

Hitting the 90-meter mark remains one of Neeraj’s biggest targets. He couldn’t achieve the landmark in Paris but hasn’t lost hope.

“I haven’t achieved a 90-meter throw yet, but during the second attempt, I felt that today might be the day. I have faith in myself, and I know I’ll reach that milestone someday. Holding your flag and winning a medal for your country is an incredible feeling,” said Neeraj.

“The last two or three years were not so good for me. I’m always injured. In training, I’m not doing a lot of throws because of my groin (injury) I really tried hard, but I have to work on my injury (staying injury-free) and technique,” he concluded.

“She Lives In A Village…”: Neeraj Chopra On His Mother Calling Arshad Nadeem ‘Her Son’

Neeraj Chopra said that his mother spoke from her heart when she said that Pakistan athlete Arshad Nadeem was ‘like her son’ after Pakistan and India claimed the top two medals in men’s javelin throw at the Paris Olympics 2024. Nadeem came up with a monster 92.97m throw to break the Olympic record and clinch the gold while Neeraj’s season best 89.45m throw earned him the silver. After the event, Neeraj’s mother – Saroj Devi – was asked about Nadeem winning the gold ahead of her son and she responded by saying that ‘the one who got the gold is also like our son’. Neeraj said that his mother is not influenced by what’s happening on social media and always speaks from her heart.

“She lives in a village, a background where she is not influenced by news on social media and television, about the relations between India and Pakistan. She has the feeling of a mother. She speaks simply and speaks her heart,” Neeraj said during an interaction with India Today in Paris.

“She speaks from the heart of a mother. Some people might have found it strange, some people might have liked it,” he added.

Earlier, Neeraj’s mother Saroj Devi said that she was happy with the way his son delivered at the Olympics and is eager to cook her son’s favourite meal.

“We are very happy. For us, silver is also equal to gold. The one who got the gold is also like our son. He was injured, so we are happy with his performance. I will cook his favourite food,” she told ANI.

Nadeem’s mother also praised Neeraj during an interaction with the local press in her village.

“He (Neeraj) is also like my son. He is Nadeem’s friend and also his brother. Wins and losses are part of the sport. May god bless him, may he win medals. They are like brothers, I’ve prayed for Neeraj too,” she said.

“What Makes Me Afraid Is…”: Neeraj Chopra’s Blunt Take On Vinesh Phogat’s Olympic Silver Appeal

Olympics 2024: Vinesh Phogat© AFP

Star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra is keeping his fingers crossed for wrestler Vinesh Phogat as she awaits a verdict on her appeal against disqualification from the Games but at the same time, he is also hoping that “people don’t forget what she did for the country” if the decision is not in her favour. Vinesh was found 100gm overweight before her 50kg category final on Wednesday and she has appealed against her disqualification in the ad-hoc division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport here. A decision on the appeal is expected to be delivered by 9.30pm IST on Saturday.

Chopra, who claimed his second successive Olympic medal — a silver to follow up on the gold in Tokyo –, said he wants the medal around Vinesh’s neck for one simple reason — “people shouldn’t forget her.” “If she gets the medal, it would be very good. If things had not panned out the way they did, she would have had the medal. I hope she gets it because if you don’t have it around your neck, that thing stays in your heart,” the 26-year-old Chopra told reporters at ‘India House’ after a felicitation by IOC member and Reliance Foundation chairperson Nita Ambani.

“Today people might say that she is our champion but, I feel till the time one is not on the podium they will forget after a few days. Mujhe yeh darr hai bas. Agar aisa na hota, a medal wouldn’t have mattered. So, I hope she gets the medal. I just hope whether she gets the medal or not, people don’t forget what she did for the country,” he said.

Chopra is the first track-and-field athlete from the country to win two Olympic medals. His gold in Tokyo continues to be an unmatched achievement for Indian athletics.

When Neeraj Chopra Supported Arshad Nadeem’s Plea For A New Javelin, Government Funds

Paris Olympics 2024: Arshad Nadeem (L) and Neeraj Chopra© X (Twitter)

Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem created history by becoming the first athlete from his country to win an Olympic gold medal. The 27-year-old broke the men’s javelin Olympic record with his 92.97m attempt to beat India’s Neeraj Chopra to the gold. It was a massive moment. This was the first time in the history of the Olympics that Asian athletes claimed the top two podium positions but the connection between Nadeem and Neeraj goes way back. Both of them have been competing against each other for quite some time and at the World Championships 2023. it was Neeraj who claimed the gold with Nadeem coming second. Over the years, both of them have expressed their appreciation for each other and Neeraj even voiced his support for Nadeem when he needed a new javelin for practice.

Nadeem won the Commonwealth Games 2022 gold medal with a 90.18m throw but his preparations for the Olympics were hampered as he did not have an international standard javelin. He said that he  has been “using one for the past seven to eight years” and asked for help from the government.

“It has now got to a stage where the javelin is damaged and I have asked the national federation and my coach to do something about it before the Paris Olympics,” Nadeem said.

“When I started off in 2015, competing in international events I got this javelin…for an international athlete aiming to win a medal in the Olympic Games, you need proper equipment and training facilities,” the athlete from Pakistan added.

Neeraj extended his support for Nadeem after hearing about his concerns and urged the Pakistan government, javelin makers and other sponsors to support him in his journey.

“It is hard to believe that he has been struggling to get a new javelin. Given his credentials, this should not be a big issue at all,” Neeraj told SAI Media in an interaction.

“It can’t be that he (Arshad) doesn’t have the means to buy a javelin. He is a champion and must be doing some brand endorsements. I reckon he has earned a bit of money too. But having said that, his government can look at Arshad’s needs and support him just like how my government is doing so.”

“Additionally, Arshad is a top javelin thrower and I believe that the javelin makers will be more than happy to sponsor him and provide what he wants. This is a piece of advice from my side,” he added.

“Won’t Be Able To Find Peace Until…”: Neeraj Chopra’s Emotional Revelation After Olympics Silver

India javelin throw star Neeraj Chopra opened up about his injury woes after clinching a silver medal in the Olympics, revealing that he might have to undergo a surgery soon after having pushed himself extremely hard to compete here while battling a constant fear of breaking down. Chopra was dealing with a nagging adductor niggle (a problem related to muscles in the thigh) in the run up to the Paris Games. But he managed a season’s best effort of 89.45m to secure a silver medal, making him the first track-and-field athlete from India to have two Olympic medals, the first being an unprecedented gold in Tokyo.

Chopra finished behind Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem, who stole the show with an Olympic record-shattering throw of 92.97m to become the first individual Olympic gold-medallist from his country.

“I have a lot on my mind. When I am throwing, 60-70 percent focus of my is on the injury. I don’t want to get injured. Whenever I go for a throw, you will see that my speed is low. I am pushing myself,” he said.

“The doctor told me to go for surgery but I didn’t have that much time to take that decision before the world championship or after the world championship because it takes a lot of time to prepare for the Olympics,” he added, referring to the 2023 world championship where he won gold.

The 26-year-old, despite not being at his best here, became only the third Indian to win back-to-back Olympic medals after PV Sindhu and Sushil Kumar.

“I am still pushing myself,” he said with a hint of frustration.

“It’s not good in sport, it’s not good to push and continue. If you want to run a long career then you have to be fit and healthy but there are competitions where you can’t make a decision. Now we will work on this and work on the technique,” he added.

Chopra said he will talk to his team and then “take a decision”.

He also detailed how the last seven years have been tough for him as far as fitness is concerned.

“I felt this in 2017. After that, I got a lot of treatments. But I will have to take a big decision for this,” he said.

Won’t find peace till I get a big throw

He didn’t mention the 90m mark but Chopra said he has potential to achieve bigger throws. Chopra’s career-best remains 89.94m which was achieved back in 2022.

“The distance that I had in me in 2016, especially in 2018, when I scored an 88m in the Asian Games, after that, I feel that I still have a lot of throws left. So, until that happens, I won’t be able to find peace. And I want to tell you that there is a lot inside,” he said without getting into the specifics.

“And I will do it. I will keep my mind ready for the future. I will work on things. I will keep myself fit.”

Haven’t been able to throw as well

Chopra, perhaps for the first time, talked about just how badly the niggle has affected him.

“I am not able to throw from a full runway. I have been throwing for the past year or two. Maximum throwers throw 40-50 in a session. It took me 2-3 weeks to complete a session because there was a fear of injury.

“It is very difficult. I am forcefully pulling it.” He also explained that his lower body is as important as the throwing arm in getting the right elevation and speed.

“If the rest of the body doesn’t work, it won’t help. I can go for a heavy and fast heave but when there is a broken leg, there are a lot of technical things. It is very difficult to throw with just the arm, to put all your power on it.

“It gets wasted if the legs don’t work properly. So there are a lot of technical things. I will not go into it, you won’t understand.” Chopra said he finds it painful to miss competitions because of fitness concerns.

“My coach always says that if you get a good blocking leg and a good groin then the throw will be 2-3-4 meters ahead and then I have to send a message saying, ‘Sorry, I have to withdraw’.

“Personally, I don’t like it at all,” he said.

After Neeraj Chopra’s Mother Called Arshad Nadeem ‘Her Son’, Pakistan Star’s Mom Wins Hearts

There could be constant talks of rivalry between Arshad Nadeem and Neeraj Chopra in the sporting spectrum but there’s nothing but love between the two. After Arshad and Neeraj secured a 1-2 finish in the Paris Olympics javelin throw final, social media was flooded by the stories of their camaraderie. In fact, Neeraj’s mother Saroj even said that Arshad is also like her son. Now, Arshad’s mother has echoed the same sentiments, saying she sees Neeraj the same way as she sees her own son.

“He is also like my son. He is Nadeem’s friend and also his brother. Wins and losses are part of the sport. May god bless him, may he win medals. They are like brothers, I’ve prayed for Neeraj too,” Arshad’s mother said in an interview.

“I am thankful to entire Pakistan for the support they lent to Nadeem, the prayers they offered for my son.”

While Arshad became the first athlete in Pakistan’s history to clinch a gold medal in an individual event, Neeraj became only the third Indian and the first in track and field to win back-to-back individual Olympic medals.

“We are very happy with the silver, the one who got gold is also our child and the one who got silver is also our child….all are athletes, all work hard,” Saroj told PTI Videos in Khandra, Panipat, where the family is based.

“Nadeem is also good, he plays well, there is no difference between Neeraj and Nadeem. We got gold and silver there is no difference for us,” she added in the interview.

Both Chopra and Nadeem are good friends off the field despite being rivals on it. Neeraj, in fact, has lent a helping hand to Nadeem, supported him on multiple occasions.
