Neeraj Chopra’s Mother Called Arshad Nadeem “Like My Son”, Pakistan Star’s Reply Is Viral

Pakistan’s javelin throw star Arshad Nadeem had a heartwarming message for Neeraj Chopra’s mother after she said that he was “like her son”. Nadeem scripted history by becoming the first athlete from Pakistan to win an individual Olympics gold medal as he claimed the top prize in men’s javelin at the Paris Olympics 2024. Nadeem came up with a mammoth 92.97m throw to break the Olympic record and it was enough to beat Neeraj who could only manage to win silver with his season-best throw of 89.45m. Following the event, Neeraj’s mother – Saroj Devi – was asked about Nadeem and she said that he is also like a son to her. Nadeem responded to her statement and said that he was grateful for the fact that she prayed for him as well and said that she is also like a mother to him.

“A mother is a mother for everyone, so she prays for everyone too. I’m grateful to Neeraj Chopra’s mother. Woh bhi meri maa hai (She’s my mother too). She prayed for us, and we were just two players from South Asia who performed on the world stage,” Nadeem told Pakistani media after returning home.

Pakistan will honour the ace athlete Arshad Nadeem with Hilal-e-Imtiaz, the second-highest award of the country, for his stupendous feat at the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024.

The government also directed for a commemorative stamp titled ‘Azm-e-Istehkam’ (commitment to stability) to be issued on the occasion of the 77th Independence Day next week.

The 27-year-old won the gold at the elite men’s javelin throw competition with a mammoth 92.97 m throw on Thursday at Paris which broke the Olympic record of 90.57 m set at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. It is the first individual gold in 40 years for the country.

Following the directive by President Asif Ali Zardari, his office sent a letter to the Cabinet Division for the formal conferment of the award, according to state media.

“Arshad Nadeem’s remarkable performance has made the nation proud on the global stage. His outstanding success in athletics is a source of pride for the country,” President Zardari stated in his letter.

The United States pipped China for top spot in the battle of medals on Sunday as Paris prepared to bring the curtain down on one of the most successful Olympic Games in history. In a thrilling finale that capped 17 days of spellbinding action, the United States women’s basketball team squeezed past France 67-66 to clinch the last gold of the Games. The win — the eighth consecutive Olympic women’s basketball won by the USA — ensured the Americans finished level with China on 40 golds each as the games drew to a close.

The USA however finished on top of the overall medal table with a total of 126 medals, with China in second place on 91.


Meanwhile, India finished on the 71st spot with six medals — five bronze and one silver.

With the last of the medals handed out, attention turned to Sunday’s closing ceremony spectacular at the Stade de France, where Hollywood star Tom Cruise is widely rumoured to feature as the countdown to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics gets under way.

Marathon magic

Sunday’s final day began with a gripping women’s marathon victory by the Netherlands’ long-distance running star Sifan Hassan.

Hassan had taken on what many considered to be a crazy gamble in Paris, competing in the 5,000m, the 10,000m and the marathon — the last two events just two days apart.

But in a jaw-dropping sprint finish, Hassan overhauled Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa to take gold by three seconds in an Olympic record of 2hr 22min 55sec.

On Friday she had taken bronze in the 10,000m after coming away with a bronze in the 5,000m.

She fell to the ground on the blue carpet in front of the golden dome of the Invalides memorial complex in the heart of Paris before grabbing a Dutch flag to celebrate an extraordinary achievement.

“It was not easy,” said Hassan, 31. “It was so hot, but I was feeling OK. I’ve never pushed myself through to the finish line as I did today.

“Every moment in the race I was regretting that I ran the 5,000m and 10,000m. I was telling myself if I hadn’t done that, I would feel great today. 

“From the beginning to the end, it was so hard. Every step of the way. I was thinking, ‘Why did I do that? What is wrong with me?’

Wrestling, weightlifting, water polo, volleyball, modern pentathlon, handball, and track cycling were the other sports to crown Olympic champions on the last day.

Hungary’s Michelle Gulyas ran and shot to Olympic gold in the modern pentathlon, with home favourite Elodie Clouvel roared on to clinch silver.

In weightlifting, China’s jubilant Li Wenwen lifted her coach into the air instead of the bar, having already secured gold.

At the velodrome, Dutch star Harrie Lavreysen surged to the men’s keirin for his third gold of the Games, ending British dominance of the event they had won at every Olympics since 2008.

New Zealand’s Ellesse Andrews blasted to the women’s sprint title to add to her keirin gold, while American cyclist Jennifer Valente won the women’s omnium.

In men’s water polo, Serbia won their third straight Olympic gold with a 13-11 victory over Croatia at La Defense Arena and pulled their coach into the pool in the celebrations.

‘Precious’

As the sport ends, attention turns to the closing ceremony and the next Olympics in Los Angeles in four years.

LA is expected to play heavily on its Hollywood star power and will roll out its big guns, with pop star Billie Eilish, rapper Snoop Dogg, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers all confirmed.

The worst-kept secret in Paris is that “Top Gun” star Cruise appears poised to close the ceremony with a spectacular stunt sequence.

Cruise is filming the latest episode of the “Mission Impossible” franchise in Europe and has been a regular feature at Olympic events in Paris.

“On August 11, the Olympic Games will be over, and the Olympic flame will be extinguished,” said Thomas Jolly, who masterminded the unique opening ceremony along the River Seine.

“That moment will remind us just how precious are these Olympic Games,” added Jolly, whose opening ceremony sparked outrage in some quarters with a scene that appeared to parody the Last Supper.

As India waits for the results of wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s hearing at the Court of Arbitration of Sport (CAS), the United World Wrestling president Nenad Lalovic shared an important insight as far as the entire weigh-in controversy is concerned. Lalovic, in an exclusive chat with NDTV, expressed his sympathies over the entire incident that saw Vinesh being disqualified from the Paris Olympic Games on the morning of her gold medal bout. Vinesh’s weight was reportedly just 100 grams over the 50kg mark that she needed to touch in order to be eligible for the final bout. But, she had to be disqualified.

Vinesh decided to lodge an appeal at the CAS, the results of which are still awaited, but the UWW chief doesn’t think there’s much scope for change in the results as the wrestling body was only following the rules that have been laid down.

“I am so sorry for what happened, but no matter the size of your country, athletes are athletes. This weigh-in was public, everyone saw what happened. How can we allow someone to compete when we all saw what happened. We don’t have any other choice but to follow our rules,” Lalovic told NDTV.

“We introduced that rule because of the care for the health of the athletes. Athletes have been obliged to weight rules in order to compete. Maybe some slight adjustments in the rules can be made, but we are not changing the rules. We are counseled and helped by our medical commission. They are absolutely against any change,” he added, ruling out the possibility of a major overhaul in weigh-in rules.

While the gold, silver and bronze medals have already been handed in the 50kg women’s freestyle wrestling, Vinesh has appealed for a joint-silver to be granted to her as she had already made the final while passing the weigh-in test.

Though there’s no provision for a second silver to be given but Vinesh and those fighting for her, haven’t given up hope.

“CAS Arbitrator Said…”: On Vinesh Phogat’s Olympic Silver Verdict Date, Lawyer Says This

Vinesh Phogat’s hearing in Paris at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has ended. The star Indian wrestler had appealed to the CAS after she was disqualified from the 50kg wrestling final at the Paris Olympics for being 100 gram overweight. Earlier, Vinesh was assured of a silver medal after entering the final of 5okg with three convincing wins but the disqualification saw her finish outside the medal bracket. Though Vinesh was within the permissible weight limit on the first day of the competition, on the second day she was found to be 100 gram overweight and was excluded from the Olympic wrestling final. 

Vinesh appealed the CAS, an international body established in 1984 to settle disputes related to sport through arbitration, for a shared silver. The hearing of the appeal took place on Friday and went on for three hours in Paris. 

Vinesh, who was represented by four French lawyers, was present at the hearing virtually. Also present were lawyers Haris Salve and Vidushpat Singhania representing the Indian Olympics Association (IOA). The United World Wrestling (UWW) had their lawyer too at the hearing. There were referee and technical officials from UWW present at the hearing. 

Dr Annabelle Bennett AC SC (AUS) was the sole arbitrator for CAS. She heard both parties’ arguments patiently. Vinesh’s lawyers argued that the wrestlers disqualification was not right. The CAS said that there is an operating procedure for which it was taking time but added that the verdict will be delivered soon.    

Singhania told NDTV that he was confident of a positive outcome. “We were the lawyers of the IOA. Harish Salve was leading the argument and I was assisting him. By an large everybody argument was heard,” he told NDTV. 

“The CAS arbitrator said I will give the operational rules order soon. The detailed reasoning will be released later. The hearing went well. The basic ask of Vinesh’s lawyer was that she should be given silver medal.”

Earlier, the CAS had released a statement on Vinesh Phogat. 

CAS Statement On Vinesh Phogat’s Plea:

“An application was filed at the CAS Ad hoc Division at 16:45 CEST on 7 August 2024 by Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat (the Applicant) in relation to the decision taken by United World Wrestling (UWW) to replace her, because of her failed second weigh-in, before the gold medal match of the Women’s Freestyle 50kg competition at the Olympic Games Paris 2024 that was due to commence at 18:15 CEST the same day (the Challenged Decision),” the statement from the CAS, issued on Friday, read.

“The Applicant initially sought a decision from the CAS Ad hoc Division annulling the Challenged Decision and ordering another weigh-in before the final match as well as a declaration that she be declared eligible and qualified to participate in the final.

“However, she did not request urgent interim measures. The CAS Ad hoc Division procedure is fast, but it was not possible for a decision on the merits to be issued within an hour, bearing in mind that the Respondent UWW would have had to be heard first. The procedure is, however, ongoing and the Applicant has confirmed that she seeks the annulment of the Challenged Decision and that she requests to be awarded a (shared) silver medal.”
