“Responsibility Of Weight Management…”: PT Usha’s Big Take On Vinesh Phogat Row

Drawing criticism for Vinesh Phogat’s weigh-in fiasco, Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha on Sunday made it clear that it is the responsibility of the athlete to manage their weight and the attack on its medical team, especially Chief Medical Officer Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala is “unacceptable and worthy of condemnation.” The 29-year-old Vinesh was left heartbroken after she was disqualified ahead of her gold-medal bout in freestyle 50kg for being 100gm overweight in the morning weigh-in, crushing her Olympic dreams and prompting her to announce her retirement.

The incident started a blame game, also leading to an uproar in the Parliament, with some sections attacking Dr Pardiwala and his team for negligence with former IOA chief Narendra Batra indicating that Vinesh’s diet might have had something to do with her disqualification.

“…the responsibility of weight management of athletes in sport like wrestling, weightlifting, boxing and judo is that of each athlete and his or her coach and NOT that of the IOA-appointed Chief Medical Officer Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala and his team,” Usha said in a statement.

“…the hate directed at the IOA medical team, especially Dr. Pardiwala, is unacceptable and worthy of condemnation.” She hoped that those rushing to judge the IOA medical team “would consider all facts before arriving at any conclusions”.

Vinesh had scripted history by becoming the first Indian woman wrestler to reach the gold medal bout in her category on Tuesday night. But her post-participation weight was found to have increased and despite all measures, which included cutting off Vinesh’s hair, she was found to be 100gm extra during the morning weigh-in.

“Each Indian athlete in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in such sport had his or her own support team. These support teams have been working with the athletes over so many years,” Usha said.

“The IOA appointed a medical team a couple of months ago, primarily as a team that would assist in the recovery and injury management of athletes during and after their competition. This team was also designed to support athletes who did not have their own team of nutritionists and physiotherapists.” Vinesh has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS), demanding that she be awarded a joint silver medal with Cuban wrestler Yusneylis Guzman Lopez, who had lost to the Indian but was later promoted to the final following the Haryana wrestler’s disqualification.

American Sarah Hildebrandt won the gold after defeating Lopez in the title clash.

The decision on Vinesh’s appeal is expected to come on August 13.

What Vinesh Phogat Told Court On Reason Behind Increased Weight At Paris Olympics

Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from women’s 50kg wrestling final© ANI Photo

Entire India awaits the Court of Arbitration (CAS) verdict on wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s joint silver medal plea. Vinesh, who was disqualified before her final in the Women’s Freestyle 50k wrestling bout, was weighing 100 grams over the 50kg limit. As the arguments continue in front of the CAS, Vinesh has reportedly sighted the tight schedule between her bout as well as the distance between Athletes’ Village and the competition arena as the reason behind her failure to make the weight cut.

According to a report in the Indian Express, the counsel for Phogat highlighted the distance between Champ de Mars Arena, the venue for the wrestling competition, and the Athletes Village as a contributing factor to her failure in making the cut at the scheduled weigh-in. The Indian wrestler’s counsel also said that the tight schedule between bouts didn’t allow her enough time to reduce her weight, which had touched the 52.7 kg mark after the first day of her competition.

The counsel further argued that Vinesh didn’t get any competitive advantage with the extra 100g she had on the second morning gave her no competitive advantage.

‘The excess of 100g is extremely negligible (representing around 0.1 to 0.2 percent of the athlete’s weight) and can easily be caused by the bloating of a human body during summer weather, as the heat makes the human body retain more water, scientifically for survival purposes. It can also be due to muscle mass increase as the athlete competed three times on the same day. It can also be caused by the food consumption of the athlete after the competitions to sustain her health and integrity for the demanding competitions,” Phogat’s counsel asserted, as per the paper

An argument over the application of the principle of proportionality has also been made.

‘There would be a manifest disproportion between the level of excess (which excludes any attempt at fraud or manipulation of the athlete) and the irreversible consequences that would result from her non-participation in the finals in addition to the deprivation of her silver medal that was acquired by hard work,’ the report stated.

Vinesh’s counsel also called for the need to keep the athlete’s health over other considerations.

A Tour Of Neeraj Chopra’s Panipat House: Swanky Cars, Bikes And A Dog

India’s golden boy Neeraj Chopra could only fetch a silver medal as he looked to defend his title at the Paris Olympic Games 2024 in the men’s javelin throw final. Neeraj was outscored by Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem, who threw an Olympics record-breaking effort of 92.97 meters, stunning the entire sporting fraternity. Despite Neeraj’s lack of success in breaching the 90-meter mark in the Paris Games, he created history, becoming the only athlete of India to bag two track & field medals in consecutive Olympic Games. Considered one of the most focused athletes in the country, Neeraj has already given the country many historic accomplishments. But, little is known about his personal life.

As NDTV reached out to Neeraj’s family in Panipat, we got a glimpse of his luxurious house, his swanky car collection, and the Olympics connection behind the name of his Golden Retriever dog.

Neeraj, who is considered one of the most humble sportspersons in India, has a crazy car collection. He also has a few high-end bikes.

It was also found out that the name of Neeraj’s dog is Tokyo, derived from the ace athlete’s gold medal-winning throw in the previous Olympic Games, which were held in the city.

After his silver medal at the Olympic Games, Neeraj said that he has been competing with Arshad since 2016 and it’s the first time that the Pakistani athlete managed to get the better of him.

“Arshad performed well and I would like to congratulate him. I’ve been competing with him since 2016, and this is the first time he has won while competing together,” said Neeraj after the final.

“Despite the injury, I am pushing myself hard. The throw was good, but I still have a lot left in me, and I need to stay fit to achieve it,” said the Tokyo Olympics gold medallist.

Hitting the 90-meter mark remains one of Neeraj’s biggest targets. He couldn’t achieve the landmark in Paris but hasn’t lost hope.

“I haven’t achieved a 90-meter throw yet, but during the second attempt, I felt that today might be the day. I have faith in myself, and I know I’ll reach that milestone someday. Holding your flag and winning a medal for your country is an incredible feeling,” said Neeraj.

“The last two or three years were not so good for me. I’m always injured. In training, I’m not doing a lot of throws because of my groin (injury) I really tried hard, but I have to work on my injury (staying injury-free) and technique,” he concluded.

“Did Not Sleep At All…”: Aman Sehrawat Reveals Tough Journey To Paris Olympics 2024 Wrestling Bronze

Aman Sehrawat won wrestling bronze medal at the Paris Olympics 2024© AFP

Aman Sehrawat scripted history by becoming India’s youngest ever medalist at the Olympics as he claimed bronze in the 57kg freestyle wrestling event at the Paris Olympics 2024. Aman defeated Puerto Rico’s Darian Cruz in the bronze medal match on Friday to clinch India’s first medal in wrestling at this year’s Olympics. In an interview with NDTV, Aman opened up about what the medal meant for him and said that although his dream was to win the gold, this medal will motivate him to perform well in 2028.

“I came with the dream of winning a medal at the Olympics. Wanted to win gold but everything happens for one’s good. Next time, I will be better prepared. This was a big boost for me and I have the belief now that I will surely do well in the 2028 Olympics,” Aman told NDTV after the bronze medal triumph.

Following his loss to Japan’s Rei Higuchi in the semifinals, Aman was overweight and he needed to get back into the permissible limit before the weigh-in. The wrestler said that they worked overnight on his weight and he did not sleep at all as his coaches put him through multiple training sessions.

“We did a lot to lose that weight. Once the bout ended, I practiced for two hours. Then at around 1am, I trained at the gym. By 3, I was somewhat done. But I did not sleep at all. The main target was to get the weight within the permissible limit. Did not sleep at all before the fight,” he explained.

Earlier, Vinesh Phogat also qualified for the 50kg wrestling final but she was disqualified from the gold medal match for being overweight. After the decision was challenged in the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), the hearing has concluded and a decision is expected by Sunday evening.

Paris Olympics: Did Antim Panghal Factor Really Force Vinesh Phogat To Compete In 50kg – A Fact-Check

As Vinesh Phogat arrived at the Paris Olympic Games, her biggest challenge wasn’t to compete against an astounding list of wrestlers but to manage her weight as she was competing in the 50kg category, contrary to the 53kg category she was more comfortable in. Months before the Olympic Games were to start in Paris, Vinesh tried to do her best and fetch the lone 53kg spot, but Antim Panghal, a 2023 World Championship bronze medallist in the weight category, had won slot in this category.

Antim facing a 0-10 elimination in the Round of 16 at the Paris Olympics 2024. As the entire Indi stares at the nature of affairs that unfolded in the Paris Games, many wonder if Vinesh would’ve fetched a medal by competing in the 53kg category.

What led to Vinesh Phogat competing in the 50kg category, and not 53kg?

Vinesh has been wrestling in the 53kg category for the last five to six  years. She had an ACL surgery in August last year which ruled her out of action for a few months. It was then that Antim sealed the Olympic quota for the 53kg category for India.

As per a report in Sportstar, Vinesh wanted to compete in the still manageable 53kg category but Antim Panghal had already claimed that spot. Vinesh even asked the federation for a trial to be conducted, asking for specific dates, but the federation didn’t provide any clarity.

What About The Trials?

The IOA’s ad-hoc committee for wrestling conducted trials for the Asian Championships and Asian Olympic Qualifiers in March.

The rule set was the winner of the trial woukd go on to compete in the Asian Olympic Qualifiers and runner-up at the Asian Championships.

The committee decided that four top players in every weight category, including 53kg category, would then compete among themselves to determine a challenger for the quota-winners to decide on the Olympic spot. Antim was the quota winner in the 53kg as she finished with a bronze at the World Championships.

Like in shooting, in wrestling, the quota is given to the National Olympic Committee and not the player.

What happened in the trials

In the trials, Vinesh participated in two weight categories – 50 and 53kg. The ad-hoc committee made an exception and allowed Vinesh to compete in both categories.

Vinesh won the trials in 50kg, thus earning the right to compete at the Asian Olympic qualifiers in Bishkek. She had to reach 53kg category to feature in the top four to challenge Antim at a later date. Vinesh achieved her target.

Later, Vinesh won the quota in 50kg for Paris 2024 during the Asian Olympic Qualifiers.

Where the trials conducted?

The final trials were not held as most wrestlers who won the quotas said that it would hamper their Olympics preparation. The seven-member Wrestling Federation of India selection committee then decided not to hold the trials and sent the respective quota-winners to their categories.

“She Lives In A Village…”: Neeraj Chopra On His Mother Calling Arshad Nadeem ‘Her Son’

Neeraj Chopra said that his mother spoke from her heart when she said that Pakistan athlete Arshad Nadeem was ‘like her son’ after Pakistan and India claimed the top two medals in men’s javelin throw at the Paris Olympics 2024. Nadeem came up with a monster 92.97m throw to break the Olympic record and clinch the gold while Neeraj’s season best 89.45m throw earned him the silver. After the event, Neeraj’s mother – Saroj Devi – was asked about Nadeem winning the gold ahead of her son and she responded by saying that ‘the one who got the gold is also like our son’. Neeraj said that his mother is not influenced by what’s happening on social media and always speaks from her heart.

“She lives in a village, a background where she is not influenced by news on social media and television, about the relations between India and Pakistan. She has the feeling of a mother. She speaks simply and speaks her heart,” Neeraj said during an interaction with India Today in Paris.

“She speaks from the heart of a mother. Some people might have found it strange, some people might have liked it,” he added.

Earlier, Neeraj’s mother Saroj Devi said that she was happy with the way his son delivered at the Olympics and is eager to cook her son’s favourite meal.

“We are very happy. For us, silver is also equal to gold. The one who got the gold is also like our son. He was injured, so we are happy with his performance. I will cook his favourite food,” she told ANI.

Nadeem’s mother also praised Neeraj during an interaction with the local press in her village.

“He (Neeraj) is also like my son. He is Nadeem’s friend and also his brother. Wins and losses are part of the sport. May god bless him, may he win medals. They are like brothers, I’ve prayed for Neeraj too,” she said.

“What Makes Me Afraid Is…”: Neeraj Chopra’s Blunt Take On Vinesh Phogat’s Olympic Silver Appeal

Olympics 2024: Vinesh Phogat© AFP

Star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra is keeping his fingers crossed for wrestler Vinesh Phogat as she awaits a verdict on her appeal against disqualification from the Games but at the same time, he is also hoping that “people don’t forget what she did for the country” if the decision is not in her favour. Vinesh was found 100gm overweight before her 50kg category final on Wednesday and she has appealed against her disqualification in the ad-hoc division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport here. A decision on the appeal is expected to be delivered by 9.30pm IST on Saturday.

Chopra, who claimed his second successive Olympic medal — a silver to follow up on the gold in Tokyo –, said he wants the medal around Vinesh’s neck for one simple reason — “people shouldn’t forget her.” “If she gets the medal, it would be very good. If things had not panned out the way they did, she would have had the medal. I hope she gets it because if you don’t have it around your neck, that thing stays in your heart,” the 26-year-old Chopra told reporters at ‘India House’ after a felicitation by IOC member and Reliance Foundation chairperson Nita Ambani.

“Today people might say that she is our champion but, I feel till the time one is not on the podium they will forget after a few days. Mujhe yeh darr hai bas. Agar aisa na hota, a medal wouldn’t have mattered. So, I hope she gets the medal. I just hope whether she gets the medal or not, people don’t forget what she did for the country,” he said.

Chopra is the first track-and-field athlete from the country to win two Olympic medals. His gold in Tokyo continues to be an unmatched achievement for Indian athletics.

How Aman Sehrawat Lost 4.6kg In 10 Hours Before Paris Olympics 2024 Bronze Medal Match

To gain something, Aman Sehrawat firstly needed to lose something. When the scales of the weighing machine showed 61.5 kg on Thursday after his semi-final defeat to eventual champion Rei Higuchi, Aman had a bigger job at hand before taking the mat for the bronze medal play-off. India’s youngest Olympic bronze medal winning grappler had to shed 4.5 kilograms of bodyweight in a stipulated time of 10 hours before mandatory second day weigh-in to qualify for the 57 kg bout.

By the time Aman was up on the weighing machine on second morning, he along with his coaches Jagmander Singh and Virender Dahiya had accomplished the mission — reduced 4.6 kgs to be eligible for the fight at 56.9 kg.

It was case being exactly 100 gram less than critical limit. If 100 gram became tragedy for Vinesh Phogat, it was a case of relief for Aman.

On Thursday, Aman had lost his semifinal bout against Japan’s Rei Higuchi around 6:30 pm.

There was no time to waste.

The ‘mission’ began with a one-and-a-half-hour mat session during which the two senior coaches engaged him in standing wrestling and it was followed by a one-hour hot-bath session.

At 12:30 they hit the gym, where Aman had a non-stop one-hour run on the treadmill.

The sweating would help in cutting weight. He was then given a 30-minute break, followed by five sessions of 5-minute sauna bath.

By the end of the last session, Aman was still weighing 900g more. He was given a massage and then the coaches asked the Chhtrasal trainee to do light jogging.

It was followed by five 15-minute running sessions. By 4:30am, Aman was weighing 56.9kg — 100g less. The coaches and the wrestler heaved a sigh of relief.

In between these sessions, Aman was given lukewarm water with lemon and honey and a bit of coffee to drink.

Aman would not sleep after that.

“I watched videos of wrestling bouts, the whole night.” “We kept checking his weight every hour. We didn’t sleep the whole night, not even during the day,” said coach Dahiya.

“Weight cutting is routine, normal for us but there was tension, a lot of tension due to what happened the other day (with Vinesh). We could not let slip another medal,” said Dahiya.

All the hard work came to a fruition when Aman won the bronze medal, beating Puerto Rico’s Darian Cruz on Friday to become India’s youngest ever Olympic medallist.
